Description

Photograph of a woman, sumptuously dressed in an elegant black dress with chic feathered hat, holding a baby in a christening gown. The woman is unidentified. The photograph was taken at the studio of the fashionable photographer Frank Pearsall, who operated studios at 298 Fulton Street & 1227 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. The verso of the card notes Pearsall's "Knarfographs". According to an 1891 article, Knarfographs (patent) were "a new style of work which Mr Pearsall has just introduced. A Knarfograph is a photograph of an India ink or sepia black tone trimmed with rough edges and mounted upon a rough paper mount with a fancy seal stamped upon colored wax at one corner." (Wilson's photographic magazine, 1891). In 1893, Pearsall expanded his gallery to 1227 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. The last record of Pearsall's gallery is in 1906.
