Description

365-page hardcover book titled How to Know the Wild Flowers and authored by Mrs. William Starr Dana (Frances Theodora Smith Dana Parsons (1861 - 1952) in 1903. This field guide to the history, legends, and etymological derivations of various wildflowers was first published in 1893. This, her most famous work, which has been referred to as the “first field guide to North American wildflowers,” went through several editions in her lifetime and has remained in print into the 21st century. The edges and spine are very worn and the corners are very bumped and worn. There are color plates of some of the wildflowers and some of the pages are detached. Some of the pages have light penciled notes/dates on them and at the end of the book are three pages with penciled names of flowers. The note from the donor stated: "This book belonged to my great-grandmother, Joanna Randall Hartshorn (1841-1921), wife of Stewart Williams Hartshorn(1840-1937) and mother of Cora Louise Hartshorn (1873-1958). My great-grandmother particularly loved wildflowers and passed this love onto her daughter. In this book my great-grandmother recorded the date and place she found a wildflower, next to its description. As she spent her summers at Squam Lake, many of the entries noted were found in New Hampshire, but there are several from Short Hills, too. I recognize the handwriting of entries made later in the 1970's as that of my mother, Catherine Jennette Hartshorn Campbell (1916-1989), Cora Hartshorn's niece. Jennette Hartshorn Campbell Skinner"
