Two photos of Reverend Julius David Rosé , grandfather of Miss Edith Rosé, who married Lt. Welsh and Emelie Benson in St. Stephens Church, Millburn, NJ October 2, 1885. Photos were done by Rockwood on 17 Union Square, NY.
Reverend Julius David Rosé (1824-1890) was born in Hanover, Germany in 1824. He was the founder of St. Matthew's German Episcopal Church in Newark (1848) and served as Rector from 1863-1869. In 1861, Rosé was mustered in to the 7th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, where he served as Chaplain. Rosé fought and was wounded in the Battle of Williamsburg (1862). He was wounded 3 times in service and was awarded 5 Civil War medals. Reverend Julius David Rosé resigned due to disability in 1863.After his discharge he entered the field of education serving as Headmaster of St. John's Hall, Summit (1870-1872).
In 1870, Rosé founded the "Mountain House" a private boys boarding school. The school was located on Church Street in Millburn on land donated by Israel D. Condit and affiliated with St. Stephens Episcopal Church. In 1879, Stewart Hartshorn gave Rosé the building and property at 45 Stewart Road to be used for a co-educational private school, which opened in 1879 as "The Heights Academy." In 1883, the Heights academy closed and the building became the home of the Bacquet Institute, a girls private school.Photograph Details
