Description

7 Chestnut Street or "The Fortress," was built by Stewart Hartshorn's architect & builder, Edward G. Layng (1869-1947). It is Hartshorn House #50. The house was featured in the 1925 photographic supplement to the Summit Herald as the residence of Edward F. Field. This house combines many Medieval Revival or Tudor Revival features. Buildings in the medieval mode are characterized by round arched entryways, tall chimneys, bay and oriel windows, towers and turrets, large mullioned windows and decoratively timbered gables. Brick and stone were the favorite materials for earlier examples of the style, while later ones usually were covered with stucco. The photograph was taken by James Shackleton.
