Description

Signed Alice Boughton sepia photograph of Bonnie Snow mounted on 13 x 10 inch matte with photographer's mark below photograph. Alice Boughton (1866-1943) was born in Brooklyn and studied photography at Pratt School of Art and Design in New York during the 1880s, where she met Gertrude Käsebier. In 1890, she opened her own studio on East 23rd Street in New York, where she specialized in photographs of literary and theatrical personalities. She was also know for portraying the modern "new woman," in line with early 20th century feminist ideas. Boughton traveled to Europe in 1901, studying in Rome and Paris. In 1902, Boughton was introduced to Arthur Stieglitz and became part of his Photo Secessionist Group, which was dedicated to raising the status of photography to that of a fine art. Stieglitz greatly admired Boughton. She participated the 1902 inaugural exhibition of his Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, and again in 1906 after being appointed by him a Fellow of the Photo-Secession. Her photographs were published in Camera Work (notably in issue No. 26). Boughton's photographs can be found in most major photography collections.
