Description

Letter from Samuel D. Williams, Counsellor at Law, 810 Broad Street, Newark, N.J. to E.(Edward) D. Pannell, Esq., Millburn. N.J. dated May 13, 1921 informing Mr. Pannell that he was in possession of the "Slacker List" and has enclosed a list of Millburn names that are on the list. The list contained names of individuals that the government believed had not fulfilled their required military service in World War I. They had either dodged the draft or deserted. The list ended up having numerous errors and was controversial. Williams states that the list was not for publication (even though many newspapers did publish the lists) and that they were instructed not to get into direct communication with any of the individuals, but to report them to the government. The list of names has not been found and the Millburn list may not have been published anywhere.
