According to John W. Condit," This is the oldest picture we have of the Condit house--taken before it was restored and repainted. It shows the hoop swing-a type which was very rare at the time. By climbing clear to the top of the ladder and then swinging off with a big push, you could sometimes reach the roof of the piazza. But it took lots of nerve to do it. A husky Polish servant girl, which we employed, used to watch the older boys do it and one day, when we were away, she climbed not only to the ladder but further up into the tree itself and swung off from one of the limbs. But she failed to keep the chain taut and the consequent sudden jerk broke it and down she came in a heap and was nearly killed. However, she was up and around in a few days apparently none the worse. They seemed to be made tougher in those days. The hoop was a mast ring made of white oak such as was used on sailing vessels and very tough, so that it withstood the shock better than the chain."Collection
