Description

"Boxwood" was the name of Walton Condit and Elizabeth R. Whittingham's house, due to the large number of Boxwood trees on the estate. The house, which stood on the N.E. corner of Wyoming & Millburn Avenue, was built in 1838 by one of the earliest residents of the town Isaac D. Hand. In 1883 Walton Condit Whittingham purchased the house. Elizabeth Whittingham lived in the house until her death in 1933, after which time her children continued to live in the house until the early 1940s. In 1945, the house was demolished to make way for the Lord & Taylor Department Store. Note: Dr. Edward T. Whittingham, Walton C. Whittingham's father, had a Victorian style house from c. 1868 on Rahway Place in Millburn.
