The Chanticler restaurant was constructed on the site of the Wellington-Campbell house at 500 Millburn Avenue. The establishment was owned and operated by William E. Naue. More than 250 people attended the formal opening supper club on December 2, 1931, which featured music by Frank Crum's Orchestra. In 1934, the Chanticler opened a new cocktail room with its Serpentine Bar. The room had modernist-style furnishing and was decorated in red and gold. Several hundred guests attended the inaugural cocktail hour from 2-6 pm on October 31. In 1935, Naue purchased the entire 6-acre tract from the Wellington Campbell estate and expanded the restaurant. When opened in December of that year, the dancing and dance room was able to accommodate up to 600 people.
