Photographs from the 1978 David Gibson Historic Sites Survey of 40 Highland Avenue, "Montview," c. 1880. One of the original Hartshorn homes (unnumbered), built for horticulturalist James Pitcher. The house was expanded c. 1890 by Lamb & Rich. Pitcher also built his extensive greenhouses for the Pitcher & Manda Nurseries adjacent to his property. The property was sold to Hartshorn by Julia M. Coggill in 1877. Hartshorn sold the property with the house to Pitcher for $8,000 on January 4, 1880. From Lamb & Rich Records: [Addition and] Alterations for James R. Pitcher to House, “Montview,” 40 Highland Avenue, Short Hills, N.J., Ca. 1879, ___; 1889, L.&R did the 1889 addition. Hartshorn house, no number. The house appears on the Robinson 1881 Map, Hartshorn Property Map (1884) and later maps. Owned by Neil and Edna Weathers in 1920s-30s.
