Three page handwritten letter from New Jersey Governor Marcus L. Ward to James Madison Drake dated Trenton, December 4, 1868.
James Madison Drake (March 25, 1837 to November 28, 1913) was an American newspaper publisher who fought in the American Civil War and received the Medal of Honor, for his action during the Battle of Port Walthall Junction in Virginia on May 6, 1864.
After the war, he served in the New Jersey National Guard, rising to the rank of Colonel. Drake died November 28, 1913.
Marcus L. Ward was born on November 9, 1812.I n 1866 Ward was elected Governor of New Jersey. The votes of Civil war veterans were a major factor in his victory. While Governor, Ward served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee and as Chairman and Treasurer of the National Union Committee.
In 1872, Ward was elected to Congress. He was not reelected in 1874. He died on April 25, 1884.Acquisition
