Name/Title
Hartshorn: First Homestead, c. 1874Entry/Object ID
2016.035.023Description
Photograph of Hartshorn residence labeled on the back with Cora Hartshorn's description of the house: "Stanford White, 21 years old, built Stewart Hartshorn's homestead, his first house built in little community of Short Hills in 1874. Water was pumped up by a windmill near the Rail Road track."
The house caught on fire in 1888 and was demolished to make way for a new, much larger homestead.
The image is the same used for the cover of her book "A Little History of Short Hills," and was also used in the engraving of Short Hills in the History of Essex County (1884).
Note: The attribution of the first Hartshorn house by Stanford White is unlikely. In 1874, Stanford White was working in the office of Henry Hobson Richardson from 1871-1878, when he departed for Europe.Acquisition
