Description

Black laquered, tin spice box decorated with Chinese figures and "G. Cinnamon" written across top front. A similar box is mentioned in Cora Hartshorn's Little History of Short Hills, on page 13. It was used in Zehmisch's General Store, the only store Stewart Hartshorn allowed in Short Hills, at 128 Hobart Avenue (now a private two-family home). Unpainted bottom and inside; light rusting inside box, primarily along joints and seams. (Primarily small dots of) Paint loss on all painted sides. Front has ca. 13 small areas of paint loss, most no bigger than 1/2" Other sides have pinhead-sized dots of paint loss. Top and lid are faded and top is a bit concave, with rough area from side to side on back half of top, which may be rust (painted over?)
