Description

Milk-glass jar of lavender cream used to gauge gasoline level (in automobiles, presumably). Top of metal lid is marked "McCabe Gasoline Level Indicator; J.H. McCabe, Jr.; Short Hills, N.J." Rim is marked "DIRECTIONS: Take a small portion on the tip of finger and spread a thin even coating for a few inches on tape , gauge, rod or stick where liquid line is likely to appear, then, lower into tank. A sharp line of demarcationat the oil interfacein instantly shown." Lower third of lid is dulled and grayer than rest of lid. The end of the word "McCabe in the center of the lid, has several tiny gouges near the endo f the name. Lid has light overall scratches and dirt. Light scuff marks on foot of jar. Purchased on eBay from "11 Warren St; 13407." Joseph H McCabe Jr is not in the 1942 directory, but is in the 1952 directory, at which time it notes that his spouse is Betty Lou McCabe.
