Thomas Ball was born circa 1731.1 He was the son of Thomas Ball and Sarah Davis. Thomas Ball married Mary Crane, daughter of Isaac Crane and Martha, circa 1758. Thomas Ball died on 20 May 1806 at Newark, Essex Co., NJ.1 He was buried at Presbyterian Churchyard, Union, NJ.1
Ball was a surveyor. About 1769 he received an appointment as Deputy Surveyor under William Alexander (Lord Stirling) Surveyor General of East Jersey. Thomas was employed by large land owners to locate and sell their vacant lands. He was an orderly sergeant of Capt. Isaac Gillam's Company and was employed in the Commissary Department. Thomas was issuing commissioner at Newark 1780-81 and Quartermaster 1781-82. He took part in the battles of Springfield and Connecticut Farms.
