Millburn's police history dates to 1868, with the founding of the Millburn Mutual Protection Society. It was pretty quiet around town at that time, but that did not mean that there was no need for law enforcement. Officers were designed on an as-needed basis until 1907, when a regular police force, consisting of a chief of police and two patrolmen, was authorized.
The three officers patrolled on foot and bicycle. In 1910, a horse patrol was established and in 1918, a motorcycle patrol was introduced. Police cars came in 1927 and in 1935, they were equipped with radios.Collection
