Description

Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #43 Transcription notes:Overshot Coverlet c. 1850 Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night Burnhams #240 Quilts and Other Bedcoverings R. McKendry #99 Unidentified weaver Lennox & Addington Co. (or Prince Edward Co.) Matthew Clark family Ernesttown Twsp. “The Beauty of the Lake” pat The attractive overshot coverlet is woven in bands of blue and red weft on a natural white cotton warp. The red weft bands in two widths are placed strategically to create a pleasing visual impact. The two panels are expertly joined at the middle to be nearly invisible. As the Burnhams state in Keep Me Warm One Night, “The Beauty of the Lake” pattern/draft was popular and widespread in Canada. At least two other coverlets in the collection (all collected in Eastern Ontario) use this pattern in different colour variations. Other similar examples have been seen locally. This example has significant historical importance for Lennox and Addington County. It was purchased at auction from the Matthew Clark homestead. Clark was an early Loyalist who also was elected to Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada in 1823. The family remained on the original Ernesttown Twsp. land grand south of Odessa on Clark Road until the auction in c. 2015. Condition: Good – the lower edge has some loss to the original short fringe and centre bottom old repair. Source: Matthew Clark homestead auction (Dave Snider Auctions) south of Odessa (now Loyalist Twsp.) c. 2015 Dimensions: 77” (196 cm) l. x 60” (152.5 cm) w. Matthew Clark was the son of early Loyalist Robert Clark who built the first mill in the area Napanee River 1785.
