Description

Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #37 Transcription notes: Overshot Coverlet c. 1850 Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #260, 261, 262 Unidentified weaver Eastern Ontario – L+A, Frontenac or Leeds Counties “Monmouth” pattern The “Monmouth” pattern is seen in several variations in Eastern Ontario in particular. It must have been a draft well known to many local weavers. This example uses a smaller table than several, thus creating a strong and pleasing optical impact. The coverlet is woven with generous amounts of home spun blue wool on a natural cotton warp. It is well seamed until the bottom centre when an unfortunate mismatch has occurred when the central tables have become extended through a miscalculation in the treadling – and then recovered at the bottom. Early coverlets often have a lighter weight due to the conservation of the valuable wool available. This one however shows the opposite. It was probably purchased by previous owner Ruth McKendry in Leeds, Frontenac or Lennox Addington where she and her husband collected for many years. They lived at Latimer north of Kingston. Condition: Very good – excellent. All intact including the blue wool stitched overcast top and bottom. Source: Tim Potter Auctions, Napanee. McKendry Auction 14-11-09 $222.50. Ruth McKendry & husband [illegible] is highly regarded as a writer & textile dealer. Ref. Quilts and Other Bed Coverings in the Canadian Tradition - coverlet sections. Dimensions: 83” (211 cm) l. x 63 ½” (161 cm) w. This example could be by the well-known but unidentified Colebrook, Campden [illegible] Lennox & Addington weaver.
