“Chariot Wheels & Church Windows” pattern
Yes, another spectacular overshot coverlet using a rare teal blue green and red wool
weft on a natural white cotton warp. It has all the hallmarks of an expertly woven mid-
19 th century coverlet, especially with dramatic color sense.
The coverlet has an beautifully matched centre seam. The bottom fringe is separated by
a narrow variation of the bottom and side borders. A continuation of the table with
reductions. This creates bottom corner motifs. The fringe on the sides have been woven
on narrow bands and then joined to the sides with the warp selvages. The degree of
[illegible but could be ‘finish’] is excellent resulting in the [illegible] beautiful [illegible] of
visual appeal.
The ROM collection contains three examples of the use of the draft pattern known as
“Chariot Wheels and Church Windows” documented in abercrombie Collection in Prince
Edward County. With pattern/draft names, they vary in different geographical areas in
the Maritimes (names are often renamed and [illegible]).
Condition: Excellent – as new. No evidence of use. Probably passed down from one
generation to the next and carefully stored in “linen chests”.
