Maroon Taffeta 2 piece dress. Entire garment is lined with a heavy brown cotton (implying winter wear). Waistband of skirt is in heavy cotton. Skirt is pleated all the way around. Skirt is hemmed in brown corduroy. Corduroy is covered by a ruffle sewn on about 2 inches above the hem. Top has hook and eye closure. Fullness is allowed for in the bosom by pleats sewn in the small waist. An illusionary jacket is on the left of the top concealing a small pocket over the heart. Sleeves in the "leg o' mutton" style with a ruffle after the poof. Has a bow on the back of the neck. Back is pleated and seamed for a small waisted hem at back has point at center interior of top revels extensive boning and a small secondary closure at the waistline. Cotton sections have been sewn to the under arms. Each bearing the stamp "Exquisite". there are maroon loops extending from the arm holes at the shoulder blades. Wedding dress.
This dress belonged to Margaret Seth Reid (Brydges) and was worn at her wedding to Charles Edwin Brydges in 1894. Margaret was the sister of Thomas James Reid, who was the owner of Reid's clothing in Almonte near the junction of Bridge and Mill Street.
Margaret died on May 16th, 1896, while giving birth to her daughter, Margaret Ann Brydges.Collection
