Fabric thimble that is stiffened with card. Slightly flatted cone-shape. One side is red, one side is yellow, with blue braid along the join. Used by Doris Sillibourne Chevrier.
Doris Sillibourne was born in 1894, was brought up on the south coast of England attending a church of England School for girls. She made this sampler when she was 16 years old and won many area awards.
During WWI she helped nurses at the local hospital where she met her wounded Canadian airman, Romeo Chevier-going to Canada as his bride after the war.
They settled in St. Lambert, near Montreal. He worked many years with Montreal, Light, Heat and Power as a provincial inspector. Doris kept up her keen interest and creative abilities in needlework in community and church events-she also kept a beautiful garden.
The donators parents enjoyed being their neighbours in St. Lambert and the donators husband and donator visited them often in their retirement years in Portland, Ont.
When Mays died in 1980, and Doris moved to a nursing home in Brockville, Ontario, the donator, Eleanor Gilmore became heir to many of their treasures. Doris would live until she was 90 years old, passing away in 1984.Collection
