Description

Lady's dress, 2 piece, brown flora pattern. Synthetic material for the shell, lining appears to be a light brown/gold cotton with other sections reinforced with a thicker red material. Skirt is pleated, with a ruffle on the right side. There is a pocket on the left side of the skirt. Skirt (B)is fastened with a single shell button and a small metal clasp below. Skirt length is 130 cm from hem to waist line. Waist diameter is 37 cm. Blouse part of this dress is the same color + material as the skirt. The blouse (A) is closed with 18 metal buttons imprinted with a depiction of perhaps an oriental scene ( a set of stairs, a small gazebo and a tropical tree), although 3 are missing. There is a sash sewn into the front and over the shoulder of the blouse. The collar is high. The sleeves are 55 cm and the distance from shoulder to shoulder is about 40 cm. The height from shoulder to waist is 45 cm and is fitted to the form of the wearer. There is a tool mesh underskirt (D) and padded white cotton item (C) that can be tied, i presume, around the waist. I believe this is an article of underclothes. It was first worn by Jennie Cameron when she married William MacIntyre at St. Luke's Corner in Stormont County in 1865.
