“Monmouth” variation
The exceptional coverlet [illegible – but could be speaks] quality in many ways. The
unbleached cotton warp has long crossed tie knotted fringe at the bottom. The warp
(doubles) ends have applied knotted wool fringes on both sides to match the bottom.
The “Monmouth” pattern variation uses dark indigo blue, cadmium red and bands in
yellow between. This weft effect creates definite breaks between the tables and the
horizontal breaks panels. A similar early example in the ROM 968.2 is very similar in
blue on cotton from Elgin County. This example was purchased at Tim Potter Auction
Napanee – from the Charles Beale Collection. He thinks it was found when living near
Brockville in Leeds County. However, both examples are very similar.
It is expertly woven with soft hand spun wool and has a nearly invisible centre seam. It
is rare to find a red, blue and yellow coverlet.
Condition: Very good – excellent with minor loss to the cotton and wool fringes on two
sides and bottom and top! Not seen often. Exceptional fringes.
