Description

The coverlet can be attributed to the prolific Ontario weaver Edward Graf. An early works the coverlet features a border of birds and a "Four Rose" pattern. The Four Rose pattern was used mainly in bridal coverlets. The coverlet was woven on a Jacquard loom. A signature block in the bottom corner says "C.S.C. 1855", C.S.C. most likely being the initials of the owner of the coverlet and 1855 the year of production. The coverlet is made of an indigo coloured wool and natural white cotton. "Beginning in the late 1860s, Graf wove on a wide jacquard loom acquired from the United States. It produced doublewidth coverlets without centre seams as well as figural designs which were more to the fashionable tastes of the times."Source: Jacquard coverlet with Cherubim. (n.d.).
