Overshot Coverlet in Indigo Blue, Red and Gray c. 1850
[illegible] Peter Fretz – Napanee
Lennox & Addington Co.
This colour wool coverlet on natural white cotton is expertly woven in a version “Chariot
Wheels” using dark blue indigo, rust red and a series of blue grey bands resulting in a
subtle yet dramatic finish.
The attribution to Peter Fretz, a professional weaver living in Lennox and Addington
County [illegible] based on a documented Fretz coverlet in the Royal Ontario Museum
(Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #321 – p.241). Although not identical the draft
patterns are very similar and considered atypical of other wheel pattern coverlets from
Ontario. Peter Fretz was also known for his variations in coloured wefts – in this case
the unusual grey-blue bands. A strong attribution may come if the location of the original
owner(s) can be established.
Condition: Very good – some losses to the bottom and side fringes. Note that the side
fringes are woven separately from the body of the coverlet and attached. The centre
seam is well matched.

Dimensions: 78” (198 cm) l. x 65” (165 cm) w. not including free fringes
John & Diane [illegible] purchased this coverlet with the [illegible but probably’ tan
check’] woman’s shawl at the house sale in [illegible] East.Collection
