Overshot Coverlet 1850-70
Ref. Quilts and Other Bedcoverings etc. Ruth McKendry #90
Keep Me Warm One Night Burnhams #312
Unknown weaver
Prob. Leeds, Glengary
Found in Kingston, Frontenac County
“Nine Roses” pattern
The coverlet is woven on a natural white cotton warp with black and cadmium red wool
for the weft. The strong colour contrast makes it quite dramatic. The draft is woven in a
variation of the popular “Nine Roses” pattern. The construction is actually quite different
from other examples. I have not seen other example with the dramatic black tables of
stars or flowers.
The example (similar) found in McKendry was found in [illegible] County woven by Jane
Hamilton about 1880. This example is certainly much earlier based on the weight and
density. The center seam is well executed.
This example showing some surface wear and fading was spotted in a thrift store in
Kingston on a hanger with the linens. It certainly jumped out. I assume since it was
donated in Kingston that it is probably of eastern Ontario origin.
Condition: Surface wear to the black wool weft on the right side. Overall, it has soft
fading over time and use – overall – fair to good. Some loss to centre black.
Source: Goodwill Thrift Store, Kingston c. 2010. I recall @50 someone knew it was an
early textile but reasonable.
