Hand written letter discussing the decision made by Robert McFarlane, William Barker, and Thomas Teskey for a dispute over a fence between John Gemmil and Daniel Shipman.
Transcription of artifact is as follows:
Ramsay Sept 25th 1848
Whereas we Robert Macfarlane, Thomas Teskey and William Barker, Fence drawers in the Township of Ramsay duly elected having been noticed by Mr John Gemmill to examine a division or line Fence between the lands of the said John Gemmill and Daniel Shipman, after having been satisfied that the said Daniel Shipman had been duly notified to attend, but did refuse or neglect to do so, we nevertheless proceeded to view the Fence in dispute and came to the following decision.
We are unanimously in the opinion that the portion of the Fence formerly allotted and agreed upon by the parties, to be upheld and kept in repair by the said Daniel Shipman, is now lying in such a state of dilapidation, that it is no fence at all and altogether unfit to prevent animals of any description from going into each others fields.
We hereby assign and award that the part of the said fence formerly allotted to be erected and kept in repair by the said Daniel Shipman. That the same be by him erected in manner prescribed by the laws of the Township, and to be finished within Thirty days, from the date hereof.
