Overshot Coverlet c. 1870
“Monmouth” pattern
Unknown weaver
Ontario – poss. Nova Scotia
This is a very appealing overshot coverlet but in many ways, it is atypical of examples in
the Monmouth pattern. Several questions do arise.
The coverlet is quite traditional with expertly joined centre seam joining the two [illegible]
expertly woven sections using indigo blue and cadmium red in double (two ply) wool.
The tables with an equal balance of colours blue and red create visual interest. The
lozenges at the corners are a clear contrast on the off-white natural cotton base. The
crisp edges of the blocks are attractive.
Compared to the front the reverse areas have less wool on the tables featuring more
natural white creating a summer-winter approach by the weaver.
It is very unusual to have the top, bottom and both sides overcast. In this case the V
stitch using natural cotton warp creates a secure finish for the weft ends. The care and
precision suggest that the weaver was familiar with carpet weaving and edging.
Of special note we see a solid red weft band in red only along the upper edge. Was this
an attempt to create a focal top edge or a shortage of blue dyed wool. It results in an
attractive element. The weight is carpet-like.
Condition: Excellent – no indication of use over time – although the centre seam has
central mismatches.
