The coverlet is jacquard woven with red wool and natural white cotton. All corners are dated 1846. The design is not in keeping with other jacquard coverlets of the 1840s but is more in line with patterns found in the 1870s in Canada. This leads me to believe that the date on the coverlet is not the date it was made or the coverlet is not native to Ontario but rather America. Usually designs originated in American and made their way to Canada where the influenced the works of Canadian weavers. The coverlet features a beautiful floral pattern fanning out from the center. The border features the "1846" and interestingly what seem to be small Scottish thistles which may speak to the identity of the weaver. There is no documentation of a similar patterns or elements in a Canadian coverlets of the 1840s that I can find.Collection
