Transcription notes:
Overshot Coverlet c. 1880
Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #315, #314
Unidentified weaver
From Eastern Ontario collection
“Whig Rose” pattern variation
This is another overshot coverlet that has some unusual characteristics. It is is [sic]
remarkable condition with some age characteristics. It was woven on a full width loom
eliminating the need for centre seaming. The colour is also quite unusual with overall
yellow ochre wool on a natural cotton warp. It also has fringes at both the top and
bottom. Usually the top is turned and bound for less wear over time.
The coverlet is woven in a variation of the Whig Rose pattern known in Nova Scotia and
Ontario. Several variations of this particularly named pattern have been seen.
The overall excellent condition suggests that it’s probably late 19 th century (or early
20 th ?)
Condition: Excellent. All fringes are intact. It clearly has not been used – but stored
away.
