2019.05.01Description
The International Business Machines Co. (now known as IBM) created this machine to help workers log when they began and ended their shift. It replaced the clerks who acted as time keepers, logging the employees’ work hours in green ink, and the overtime, tardiness, and early departures in red. It is based on Dr. Alexander Dey’s patent from 1888.
Each worker was assigned a number and they would press the rotating pointer into the corresponding hole. The machine recorded the time on a pre-printed sheet and rang a bell.
The plaque under the cast-iron wheel states this machine was made in Toronto and is number 2804604.
The factory in Toronto was the first time the company used the name "International Business Machines Co. Ltd."
