The weaver Wilhelm Armbrust is considered the father of Jacquard weaving in Canada. He is known to have the first loom with attached Jacquard mechanism as early as 1834 when he was advertising his fancy coverlets available in a St. Catherines newspaper.
Armbrust was born in Germany in 1807 and settled near Jordon, Louth Township, Lincoln County, in 1830. A number of his Jacquard coverlets are documented during his major production years of 1834 to 1848 when he retired to become a full time farmer. (It is speculated that his loom(s) and patterns transferred to Edward Graf at that time..)
This coverlet pattern is quite rare since it has never been documented in the major research sources/publications. The common motifs here include tulips, birds, flowers, and eight pointed stars. Armbrust cut his own jacquard cards and some motifs reappeared in various designs in the coverlets. The corner bottom cartouches indicate that it was made for M.S. in 1841. The single heart between pillars was used by Armbrust for non-marriage coverlets (marriage coverlets employ 2 hearts and a balance) A.S. possibly Simmerman(?) Family of Jordon Twspm, he wove others for them. - Dennis Mills (from white binder of coverlet information).Collection
