For many years the weaver for this coverlet was unknown. The Burnham's in "Keep Me Warm One Night",1973, suggested it was the work of an unknown Welland County weaver who was working in the 1830s-1850's. Several examples of his work are in the Royal Ontario Museum.
I am prepared to make an attribution to Moses Grobb, who worked near Vineland, Clinton Township, Lincoln County. A careful examination of the bottom corner cartouches have placed the date 1854 with very distinctive "5'5"? that has a diagonal fill across the top of the five merneral?. This is consistent with other works linked to Moses Grobb. While the unknown weaver from Welland used an open numeral 5 when dating his works in similar cartouches, the ____ provenance for this coverlet also makes the link to Grobb. In the late 1970's I purchased it from antique dealer Nick Trainor (Adam Haynes Antiques) in Niagara. He had purchased it from a descendant of Moses Grobb. This coverlet was stored in a chest of drawers also made by Moses Grobb.
The contstruction uses dark indigo wool on a natural white cotton ground. The pattern uses very stylized flowering trees and longer floral blooms. The flower and crow border on three sides also includes prominent stars. (Also a recurring feature of Grobb's weaving examples.)
