Indigo blue wool on natural white cotton ground.
This tied double cloth coverlet "demonstrates Edward Graf at his peak". It has indigo wool weft on a natural cotton ground. the field is divided into 9 identical panesls, each with a floral design surrounded by four birds of paradise. The bird of paradise was a popular motif in the US around the mid 19th century. There is a cartouche in each corner which reads "BIRD OF PARADISE".
Edward Graff was born in Prussia who immigrated to upstate New York in 1840 before moving to Upper Canada in the late 1840s or early 1850s. He bought Wilhelm Armhurst's loom and equipment after he ceased weaving in 1848.Collection
