Wilhelm Magnus Werlich, c.1865 - 1870
This tied double cloth coverlet features bands of bright red and green wool on a natural white and dyed blue cotton ground. It features a strong central motif, elaborate coloured bands and geometric and floral patterns which are common of Werlich's works.
Wilhelm Magnus Werlich was a German weaver who immigrated to Canada in 1850. He was trained in Germany and bought a jacquard loom and patterns from the United States after the Civil War. Coverlets were falling out of fashion in the US at the time and Werlich was one of several weavers who repurposed old American designs and found a market for them among the German Menonites of Waterloo County. This pattern is very similar to an earlier one from Pennsylvania. Werlich worked until 1890.Collection
