Description

Daniel Knetchtel, 1875 - 1890 Indigo blue wool on a ground of white and blue cotton tied double cloth coverlet. It has a thick border with floral, leaf and bird motifs. Daniel Knetchtel was one of several weavers who came to Waterloo County from Pennsylvania and New York around the time of the US Civil War when the American textile industry was becoming more mechanised. “Knetchtel’s coverlets are large and dramatic with strong central medallions surrounded by geometric forms”
