Description

August Ploether, c.1870 - 1880 This tied double cloth coverlet has indigo blue, cadmium red, moss green bands of wool on a white and blue cotton ground. It features an American eagle with shield which was a popular motif around the time of the centennial of US independence. Pattern matches coverlets signed by August Ploether who was a German weaver working in Preston, Waterloo county. Ploether’s early coverlets were monochrome while his later works featured multicoloured bands. Coverlets 26 and 27 have the same pattern and colours.
