Description

William Withers, c. 1855 - 1865 Cadmium red, green and black wool on a natural white ground. Tied double cloth. Floral and leaves design with thistles and roses - symbols of Scotland and England. William Withers immigrated from Scotland to York County, Ontario in 1850. He died between 1861 and 1871. He may have been trained as a carpet weaver in Scotland as his coverlets show similarities to Scottish woven carpets. He found a market for coverlets among the Mennonites of the Markham area who preferred hand woven goods.
