Description

John Campbell, c.1880 Cadmium red wool on natural white cotton ground. Tied double cloth. Shows floral and geometric motifs which were popular in the late Victorian period. The inner border features small willow trees flanked by shielded eagles which were a common motif around the time of the US centennial. John Campbell immigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1832 and moved to the London, Ontario area in 1859. He worked as a weaver until his death in 1885. This pattern is referred to as the “rose and stars pattern”. This coverlet is documented in Campbell’s account book which is in the collection of the Ontario Science Centre.
