Description

Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #44 Transcription notes: Overshot Coverlet c. 1850-60 Camden Twp. misspelled as Campden by Burnhams p. 202 Unidentified weaver of Colebrook Camden Township, Lennox & Addington Co. “Monmouth” pattern The coverlet is woven with red and blue weft in wool on a bleached white cotton warp woven as singles. It has the feel of an early example with fine spun wool. The result is a light but densely woven with excellent weight and drape (seen in many early coverlets). The weaver is the unidentified artisan who is known as the Colebrook weaver from Camden Township in Lennox and Addington County. Another example is in the collection – equally accomplish. The identity [illegible] place is confirmed by an almost identical example in the ROM #260 Burnham but in black wool on cotton. This coverlet had a long history in the county and appeared at auction in Napanee in 2024. It demanded interest by other local collectors but I couldn’t let it go. With more work I may “uncover” his name. He was certainly a well-trained professional supporting the early immigrants to the area. By 1856, the Grand Trunk Railway arrived with imports from US and Great Britain commercial mechanized production. To survive as weavers, some relocated farther north in Ont. away from the railroads. Condition: Very good. Very minor wear, fringe losses. Source: Brad Snider Auctions, Napanee 27-01-2024 at the January consignment auction – a local but unnamed. $186.45 Dimensions: 74” (188 cm) l. x 69” (175 cm) w. Two panel – centre seamed.
