Transcription notes:
Overshot Coverlet c. 1850-60
Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night. Burnhams #299
Unidentified weaver
Poss. Halton County
“Dog Track” motif
This coverlet is almost identical to the very first coverlet I purchased from an Oakville,
Ontario dealer – also in indigo blue weft on a bleached cotton warp. It may have been
woven by the same Halton County weaver who is unidentified. The coverlet here was
found in Mississauga south (not far away in Peel County about 1985.
It however is heavier with a more generous amounts of darker indigo wool. The name
“Dog Track” is used for the central motif with crisp table blocks. The central field extends
to the far edges without edge border motifs like the other. In this case the blocks are
larger with a reduction of the separation panels by one unit. The result is a pleasing
contrast and balance.
The two panels are joined by a well matched centre seam.
Condition: Very good. Very minor loss of blue wool in two block tables low to one corner.
Source: Memories fade with time. It was collected many years ago - 1980’s - at an
antique show in Mississauga with no provenance available. It was a period when the
history of their pieces had little interest – unfortunately.
Dimensions: 86” (218.5 cm) long x 63 ½” (161 cm) w
Perhaps purchased from David Wells of Some Other Time Antiques in Streetsville
