Description

Dennis Mills 2024 donation coverlet #16 Transcription notes: Overshot Coverlet c. 1850-60 Ref. Keep Me Warm One Night, Burnhams #329 Unidentified weaver John Campbell, Komoka, Lobo Middlesex Cty wove similar example in ROM “Freemason’s Felicity” pattern variant This coverlet [illegible but could be ‘uses’] a very dense weave using black and red weft in wool on a natural white cotton warp. The draft is an interesting variation of “Freemason’s Felicity”. The complexity of the weave probably required at least an eight shaft loom. The minute interplay of the black and red woolen weft creates a dazzling impact. This is certainly an example of an expert weaver. The elimination of part of the chariot wheel borders links it more directly to the tables. Two examples in the ROM 328 & 329 are attributed to John Campbell, a Scottish weaver from Lobo Township (Komoko) in Middlesex County. This coverlet was purchased at the Toronto Antiques Show in the 1990s and came from an Ontario dealer without provenance. It has a nearly invisible matched seam, only found with a close check of the reverse side. Condition: No damage or loss. Some fading to the front. It must have been used on a bed and exposed to sunlight for a period of time. The reverse, unfaded, is spectacular. Source: Toronto Antique Show (dealer not recorded) but [illegible but probably ‘central’] Ontario probably, c. 1995. Dimensions: 79 ½” (202 cm) l. x 71” (180.5 cm) w. The natural cotton warp is darker than most and may have been dyed to soften the contrast.
