Mark took shop classes in school where he learned technical skills. At the Collie Mill, he worked in the dye house for two years, he talked about the mini ecosystem it created. The dyed cotton fibers would adhere to the skin of the workers. He began doing maintenance in the mill and told a story about fixing the electrical system where part of the building was also heated with a boiler. He placed safeguards on electrical systems and became a safety officer. He talked about safety hazards, fires, and accidents. He talked about machine history and how different machines from different eras would work together for one cloth, he described cutters working with shears on long rolls of cloth. He talked about shift work and the union and how he quit the mill and how it stayed open for four more years after he left.
He talked about an incident where electrical work in the mill knocked out power to Almonte for two days and how hydro engineers solved the problem.
