Murray told a story of how the mill paid for his father’s mortgage, in the house Murray lives in now. Hisfather and brothers worked at the mill as well. Murray started after finishing at the air force post World War 2. He went over how the wool was processed through which machines. He worked in the finishing department and later learned how to spin the wool. He described the building layout and what jobs occurred where. Went over the carding room, the spinning mule and the raw yarn that filled the bobbins, as well as the noisy spinning machine and looms. He described machine maintenance that was done, oiling the machines and cleaning them. Murray did not work on the dye floor but talked about how you needed to be skilled there and how the leftover dye would be dumped in the river. There was an elevator lift that transported the bales of wool and whatever was spun to different floors of the mill. During his time, the mill was coal-operated for firing the boilers and there was a bell that would toll to say when work would start. Women would mainly work in the worsted room and some were weavers. He talked of union issues at the mill. Murray enjoyed process of working with machinery, “satisfaction in producing something reasonably perfect”
