VIDEO INTERVIEW Interviewer: Terri Clarke Interview Date: June 21, 2013 Wentworth Marshall worked at the Collie Mill in Appleton from 1946 until 1953. Marshall’s father was the general manager and the vice president. By age 13 Marshall would have to fill in for people who were absent. He worked in the carding room, the spinning room, the weaving room, and the dye house. The mill operated on a three shift, 24 hour basis. He spoke of the Collie bus as well as injuries at the mill. He says he did not enjoy working there but enjoyed the spinning frame. The mill smelled of lamb, the oil that came from the same animal it took to process. He said there were difficulties with the union since his father worked in management in 1949. Marshall helped assemble incoming machines and told how the bales of wool would arrive in truckloads.
