Interviewer: Marilyn Snedden
Interview Date: June 18, 2013
In the 1930s when her father worked at the mill they would back mortgages and car payments, with Eleanor’s husband they covered dentist expenditures. Around the wartime boom, there were 3 shifts, shift work for 24 hours and over 200 employees. Collie’s mill took over in 1937. The mill bought many houses for boarding workers and their families. Eleanor enjoyed the familial atmosphere of the mill, working in administration. There were equal members of men and women working at the mill and wages were equal. She talked about community life and how the mill went bankrupt in 1987. The unions were in place, but she did not belong to one.
