Doreen O'Meara was born in Almonte and attended St. Mary's Catholic School. She left high school in grade 10 and took a job at the Rosamond mill to care for her sick mother. She worked as a bobbin winder from 1951 until 1953. She left the mill after getting married and becoming pregnant. She said that the machinery in the mill smelled very strongly of grease and oil. She also worked at the Collie Mill in Appleton after her first child was born. She remembers taking the Collie bus to work driven by Angus O'Keefe and talks about the schedule. Her husband worked for Borden's Dairy and later Producer's Dairy. Doreen also talks about what they did for entertainment including swimming at the beach, going to Kenny Fisher's dance hall, and the Almonte Fair in September.
