Scope and Content

Letter address to A.M. Greig, Esq. Almonte, Ontario from, J.S. Carstairs , the secretary for the Liberal-Conservative Assiation for Ontario. The letter is type-written with a heading from the party. The letter is urging the conservative organization in North Lanark to submit thier candidates for the next election. They are also urging them to hold a convention. Conservative candidate for PM is Mr. Borden. Transcription of artifact is as follows: THE DOMINION LIBERAL CONSERVATIVE ASSOCIATION FOR ONTARIO 410 CROWN LIFE BUILDING, TORONTO J.S. CARSTAIRS, SECRETARY. M. Greig, Esq., Nov. 22, 1907. Almonte, Ont. Dear Sir: Some time ago Mr. J. F. Templeton of The Mining News, Sudbury, mentioned you to me as one of the leading workers of North Lanark. We have not in this office any information concerning the Conservative organization in your riding, and I have written three times to Mr. W. H. Stafford, President of the Conservative Association for South Lanark, without receiving any reply. May I request you to ask the secretary of your Association to send me a list of the officers of the constituency? This should be as complete as possible. Has either of the great political parties nominated its candidate for the next general election? Will you give me in confidence your opinion concerning present political conditions in North Lanark? Is there any reason why you should not hold a convention at once and put the very strongest candidate you have in the field? If we are to sweep Ontario - as the News has prophesied - we must not leave everything to be done after the writs are issued. Our leader, Mr. Borden, is desirous that political meetings should be held throughout the winter in Ontario for the purpose of placing the record of the Laurier Government definitely and positively before the people. I need not remind you that unless this is done, much of the labor of our members at Ottawa, in removing the lid from the atrocities committed by the present government, has been in vain. Why should there not be several good meetings in the riding before spring? You are so convenient to Ottawa that you might have your choice of almost the whole body of men fighting there in the Conservative interests. Yours sincerely, J. S. Carston.
