THE VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER (FACULTY OF TECHNOLOGY) COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY JUNE SESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS, 1939 SESSION 1938-39 MECHANICS OF TEXTILE MACHINERY TEXTILE INDUSTRIES. 2nd Year Ordinary and 1st Year Higher Thursday, 22nd June, 1939. 9.30 a.m.- 12.30 p.m. Candidates are required to attempt not more than FIVE questions, at least TWO from each section. Questions: SECTION I 1. The following picker displacements, during successive 4 degree movements of the crankshaft, were found by turning a cone underpick loom slowly, by hand, during the picker acceleration period: Crankshaft displacement, degrees, (total) Picker displacement, Inches (Increments) Plot the picker velocity curve for a loom speed of 180 picks per minute, assuming the game relationship between picker and crank shaft displacements as given In the table. Explain, briefly, why this assumption Is not correct. Estimate the probable maximum shuttle speed and the work done per minute in accelerating the shuttle, if its weight is 0.75 lb. 2. Figure I shows a section through a porcelain eye, placed in the side of a shuttle. Define the angle at which the eye should be set, with relation to the centre line of the shuttle, so that the tension in the weft, due to friction at the eye, may be the same on both traverses of the shuttle. Ignore the thickness of the weft. FIGURE 1
