Found in Napanee, Lennox & Addington Co.
“The Beauty of the Lake” pat.
This early coverlet woven with red wool weft on a natural white cotton warp was
purchased at Auction in Napanee, in Lennox & Addington County.
It has the hallmarks of an early example with darkened natural cotton, modest use of
red wool (early examples often “stretch” the available materials indicating careful use of
valuable fibres). As a result the drape is quite fine. It is quite [illegible] in terms of overall
weight.
The pattern is identified as “The Beauty of the Lake” and was among the most popular,
found across Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. Other local examples from L&A and
P.E. Counties are found in the collection. A draft of the pattern is in the Abercrombie
Collection from Prince Edward County (ROM).
In this example the “wheels” are elongated noticeable in the central tables. There is a
mistake in the threading on the left front side where the colours are reversed (opposites)
resulting in a longer table than usual.
Condition: Very good – no surface loss but [illegible but could be darkening] on the front
through use and exposure (no fading).
Source: Lambert Auctions, Napanee @ 2007. [illegible but could be load] from auction –
old family with L&A history – name not recorded.
Dimensions: 77 ½” (196 cm) l. x 65 ½” (166.5 cm) w.
A nice border created by extending the pattern in variation. Well matched centre seam.Collection
